Island: マウイ島

Service Area: Hana

Ala Kukui, which means “Pathway of Illumination,” is a center for deep dialogue, creative expression, spiritual restoration and intercultural exchange. The location is pure magic—the legendary area of Hana known as “Aina ka ua, kalani ha’aha’a’… “land of the low lying heavens.”

Ala Kukui encourages personal growth through global awareness and appreciation of Hawaiian cultural values.

The mission of Ala Kukui is to strengthen and enhance relationships among spirit, land, ocean and all life forms they support in our islands and throughout our global community.  By sustaining these relationships, we enable lokahi (the harmonious balance of life) to flourish.

Accommodations:
Ala Kukui’s retreat center is a large 4 bedroom 3.5 bath home tucked away on 12 secluded acres between the Pacific ocean and Haleakala, Maui’s majestic mountain.

The home accommodates 8 to 13 people comfortably.  A separate one bedroom apartment located on property is available for retreat leaders or facilitators who need separate accommodations from the group.

Kitchen:
Cook your meals in our separate Hale Kuke.  Equipped with top of the line updated appliances the kitchen is a chef’s dream come true.  Information on catering is also available upon request.

Laundry Facilities:
A laundry room is provided for guest use.

Business Services:
The retreat center has wireless internet connection, and a printer, copier, scanner and fax machine is available for guest use at no charge.

Landscaping:
The property is immaculately maintained and features Native Hawaiian flora and fauna, as well as a collection of rare palms.  An orchard is located less than a hundred yards from the retreat center, and guests are invited incorporate the harvest in their meals.  A shrine in honor of the cultural icon The Black Madonna is located on property and provides a quiet space for meditation and contemplation.

Swimming
Ka Pueokahi, often referred to as Hana Bay is located just a short 5 minute drive away.  This historical bay is the birth place of King Kamehameha’s favorite wife, the powerful Queen Kaahumanu.  Swim, enjoy and let your day unfold at Ka Pueokahi enjoying the beauty of Hana’s magnificent coastline.

Massage, Meditation, Yoga
Hawaii has a tradition of ancient teachings that emphasize harmonious living. Hawaiian healing massage, chanting, herbal medicine and cleansing rituals are powerful tools for tapping into wellness. Indigenous meditation techniques merge with Eastern traditions to form a special strain of mind/body medicine.  Our staff would be happy to arrange private session with local practitioners.

Culturally Important and Historical Sites

Our staff would be happy to arrange excursions to the following:

Kahanu Garden of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, home of Pi’ilani Hale Heiau.  Pi’ilani Hale is the largest known heiau, or temple in the state, and was built in honor of Maui’s great chief Pi’ilani.

Hana Cultural Center, which houses pictures and artifacts of Hana’s colorful and historical past.

Haleakala National Park at ‘Ohe’o Gulch – You can swim the “seven sacred pools”, hike the magnificent bamboo forest, and enjoy the breathtaking waterfalls all within Hana’s own National Park.

Kapahu Living Farm – Experience first-hand the farming method used by Native Hawaiians.  Get knee deep in mud paddocks where kalo, the staple of the Hawaiian diet, is grown.  Listen to the stories passed on through generations, of the land and traditions still practiced today.

We can arrange just about anything to make your retreat a memorable experience…hula lessons, ukulele lessons, and even a traditional Hawaiian luau!
