Special Travel Advisory from Aloha Airlines
airplane

Effective immediately, any liquids or gel-like substances will not be allowed as a carry-on aboard any aircraft. Screening and disposal of such items will take place at the security checkpoints and at the departure gates. Examples of prohibited items include but are not limited to: bottled water, all beverages such as juice and milk, shampoos, toothpaste, perfumes, aerosols, hair gels, oils, lotions and creams.

Travelers should anticipate longer lines and slower processing by the TSA at the security checkpoints as a result of the additional security measures. Please plan accordingly to assure that you have sufficient time to get to your departure gate to board your flight on time. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to departure for Trans-Pacific flights and two hours prior to departure for Inter-island flights.

Patents, Plants and Polynesian Ancestors:

Aloha Jurisprudence and Taro makes international news

In June, a landmark decsion by University of Hawaii to relinquish patents to taro plants has sparked worldwide discussion on intellectual property and cultural uses and rights to agriculture. "The basic idea here is that Hawaii's court are taking direction from what the Hawaii statutes call the "aloha spirit": "the working philosophy of native Hawaiians(;) ... Alfred L. Brophy, Univ. of Hawai'i School of Law

'Aloha' is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence." HRS =A7 5-7.5(a).

One of about 30 or so species of plants that ancient Polynesians brought with them to these islands in their voyaging canoes, the precious taro is deeply entwined in the culture. An ancient Hawaiian chant, the Kumulipo, details the creation of the universe. It tells of Wakea and the union of his daughter. Together, they had two sons. The first son, Haloa-naka it means long, trembling stem--was born malformed, apparently lifeless. Buried outside the home, Haloa-naka grew to become the taro plant. The second born son was perfectly formed. Wakea named him Haloa, which means long stem. Haloa became the first man and the ancestor of all Hawaiian people.

To this day, Hawaiians love, respect and malama, or care for, the taro plant, revering it as an elder brother. Hawaiian people malama the taro plant, and in return, the taro will malama us back by providing food.

Botanically, taro (Colocasia Esculenta) belongs to the family of Araceae, which includes the better known philodendron, dieffenbacchia and anthurium. The true taro lover compares the hundreds of ever changing varieties with the same appreciation and poetic language as a fine wine connoisseur distinguishes her wines.

Court Rules that GMO farming in Hawaii violates Endangered Species Act

A Clear Victory for Hawaii's Environment

Citing possible harm to Hawai'i's 329 endangered and threatened species, a federal district judge has ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) violated the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in permitting the cultivation of drug-producing, genetically engineered crops throughout Hawai'i.

Hawai'i is the nation's leading state for plantings of experimental, genetically engineered crops, having hosted more than 5,000 such tests from 1987 through 2004, including several dozen biopharm crop trials.

"The ruling is a clear victory for Hawai'i's environment," said Joseph Mendelson, Legal Director of the Center for Food Safety. "It will help protect the islands from the illegal field-testing of genetically engineered, drug-producing crops."
