New Business Focus: Brilliant Voices offers Volun-tourism on Maui

helping hands

Ever wanted to restore a cloud forest, repaint a local homeless shelter, or be part of a team working on restoring an ancient fish pond part as part of your Hawaii vacation?

Ever wanted to learn about Native Hawaiian culture and lands from a talented, passionate team of ethno-botanists, archeologists, and Native Hawaiian cultural guides.

"People who help the land and the culture, who give unselfishly for the sake of the land, they are the heroes, the real warriors." says Ed Lindsey, Project Director, Maui Cultural Lands

A new Maui based company called Brilliant Voices is helping redefine corporate tourism and business team building in Hawaii by helping match company retreats with projects and people in the islands that can receive as well as give.

Halloween's Cultural Roots

Bonus: Where to Party in Hawaii!
pumpkin

When most of us think of Halloween, we think ghosts, witches, and children trick or treating. Did you know Halloween's has cultural roots as a festival planned midway between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice.

Halloween was originally celebrated by Celtic people in France and the British Isles more than two thousand years ago. Halloween was on the eve of the festival of Samhain, meaning "summer's end." When the Christian church co-opted the ancient holiday, Samhain became a day to honor the holy (hallowed) who have passed away.

Maui is the Hawaiian Superman! What's your Superhero?

Unleashing your own Super Powers this Halloween
maui_superman

by Anandra George: True Freedom Coaching

Superman. Wonder Woman. The Incredible Hulk. She Ra. Storm and Cyclops. All of them have distinctly cool costumes and evoke awe from their power to overcome evil with their superhuman inner strength.

This Halloween, I'm gathering a group of friends to take the superhero costumes idea to the next level. We're not just going to mimic pop culture superheroes, but create characters that reflect our own superhuman strengths.

If you were a Superhero, what would YOUR Superpowers be??

Hawaiian Supermen bike and paddle 500 miles across Hawaii in a week

Laird and Kalama undertake marathon fundraising for autism awareness film fundraiser

What could inspire two of the world's best watermen, Laird Hamilton and David Kalama to take a week and go on a 500 mile marathon across Hawaii, traveling by bike and surf board from South Point on the Big Island to the Kaua'i's Kilauea lighthouse, the northernmost point in the main Hawaiian Island chain?

The purpose of the marathon odyssey is to raise funds to promote a documentary film about autism made by underwater cinematographer Don King and his wife, Julianne Yamamoto King. The film "Beautiful Son" is about the Kings' son Beau, 6, who has autism.

Don King said "I was really touched by Laird's generosity for offering to do this crossing as a fund raiser for the film. While Laird and David Kalama did it together, I followed as a film maker and saw firsthand the amount of effort it took to undertake the challenge, I went to thank Laird, and he just told me: "This amount of effort is what autistic families are dealing with all the time."

Earthquakes and Tsunamis! Oh My!

What to do when a Tsunami Watch has been issued.
tsunami warning

Did you feel the earthquake last week? Did your power go out? Do you have a plan?

BE PREPARED FOR A TSUNAMI!
You should: Listen for civil defense sirens, have a plan, be prepared to act quickly.

Use a NOAA Weather Radio or stay tuned to a Coast Guard emergency frequency station, or a local radio or television station for updated emergency information. Most tsunami detection equipment is located at the coast. Seismic action may be the only advance warning before a tsunami approaches the coastline.

Earthquake update: Maui and Big Island park closures:

Two Maui Parks, part of Kealakekua Bay closed from rockslides
kealekekua bay

BIG ISLAND: The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed portions of Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park due to rock and landslides along steep slopes surrounding the bay. Public access to the Pali and Ka'awaloa Flat has been limited within the park and from the Captain Cook Monument to the Hikiau Heiau.

MAUI: Little Makena is the second Maui park area now closed as a result of a 6.6 earthquake and aftershocks that rattled the state. The Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park also was ordered closed as a result of damage to a bridge and unstable conditions on cliffs above the scenic highways leading to the area.

The DLNR closed Little Makena Beach after a landslide occurred on the Puu Olai cinder cone on Wednesday.

Hiking trails, waterfalls, cliff faces, rocky ledges and other frequented areas may also be destabilized and dangerous even if unmarked.
Please use common sense and play safe in Hawaii.
